TESTING TRAFFIC OFFENDERS FOR MENTAL HEALTH ISSUES BY PSYCHIATRISTS HAS LED TO A DECREASE IN ROAD ACCIDENTS, ACCORDING TO THE TRAFFIC COMPLIANCE AND ENFORCEMENT CORPS (TRACE).

Seni Ogunyemi, the Commander and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), highlighted the effectiveness of subjecting traffic offenders, particularly those who violate routes, to psychiatric tests in reducing accidents within the state. Ogunyemi emphasized that directing erring drivers, especially those engaged in one-way driving, to undergo psychiatric evaluations is a corrective measure aimed at deterring them from repeating the offense. In a statement released on Sunday, Ogunyemi made these remarks during a visit by executive members of the Medical and Dental Consultants Association of Nigeria, Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta Chapter, to his office in Ibara, Abeokuta. He outlined various corrective measures, such as fines and other strategies, that have significantly contributed to the reduction of accidents in the state. Additionally, he mentioned initiatives such as the introduction of road Traffic Mayors and Marshals, establishment of TRACE Clubs in schools, and capacity-building training for officers to enhance their professionalism. Ogunyemi urged medical personnel to collaborate with and support TRACE in their road safety programs to educate residents in the state. He emphasized that the aim is not punitive but corrective, to prevent reoccurrence of offenses. In response, Dr. Sola Adebisi, Chairman of the association, praised TRACE officers for their conduct and efforts on the roads, pledging to strengthen the existing relationship between the association and the agency.Meanwhile, Mrs. Seun Boye, the state chairman of the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, appealed for TRACE's support for the successful hosting of the 2024 Nigeria Public Relations Week scheduled for April.
